Wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth are the last to erupt, usually between the ages of 17 and 20, and often do not find enough space in the dental arch to erupt correctly. This can cause them to remain impacted in the bone or erupt only partially, causing pain, inflammation, gingivitis, abscesses, and even resorption of neighboring teeth.
These problems are common because some people do not have the dental germ, while others have the tooth positioned horizontally, which makes eruption difficult.
There is also the possibility that, in patients prone to crowding, especially those who have already undergone orthodontics, wisdom teeth contribute to changes in tooth position.
When there is inflammation during eruption, it may be necessary to remove the gum tissue that partially covers the tooth (ulectomy) or perform gingival curettage, in addition to maintaining rigorous hygiene and using antiseptics.
Professional evaluation is essential to identify whether the case requires monitoring or extraction, which is indicated in situations of pain, lack of space, beginning of eruption, or horizontal positioning. Often, removal of both the upper and lower wisdom teeth on the same side is recommended.
